Metals, especially steel and iron, are indispensable in numerous industries – but they are in constant battle with the environment: moisture, chemicals, salt spray or aggressive media lead to corrosion and drastically reduce the service life and functionality of components. To effectively counteract this, Buser Oberflächentechnik AG offers specialised corrosion protection coatings that are optimally tailored to the material, area of application and environmental conditions. With a broad portfolio of coating technologies, Buser ensures that your components remain protected, functional and economically viable in the long term.

Why a coating against corrosion is indispensable

Corrosion refers to the gradual decomposition of metallic materials through chemical or electrochemical reactions with their environment. The best-known case is the rusting of iron – but aluminium, stainless steel and alloyed steels are also at risk under certain conditions. The consequences range from visual defects and loss of function to safety-critical damage.

Increasing environmental pollution – such as air pollution, aggressive industrial atmospheres or salty moisture in offshore environments – is placing ever greater demands on corrosion protection. Components that come into contact with water, acids, alkalis or solvents require permanent protection that goes far beyond conventional coatings.

Corrosion-resistant coatings act as a barrier between the material and the environment. Depending on the technology used, they not only offer protection against oxidation and material degradation, but also additional functional properties such as chemical resistance, temperature resistance or electrical insulation.

Coating technologies

Depending on the area of application, medium and substrate, different processes are required to protect metals effectively and permanently against corrosion. Buser offers a wide range of state-of-the-art coating technologies that can be individually tailored to your requirements.

Powder coatings – fluoropolymers for corrosion protection on steel and aluminium components

Powder coatings with fluoropolymers such as PTFE, PFA, FEP, ETFE or PVDF are among the most effective solutions in industrial corrosion protection. They form a dense, pore-free barrier against external influences and also offer further functional advantages

  • Reliable protection against moisture, chemicals and aggressive gases
  • Non-stick properties and very low friction coefficients
  • High temperature resistance (in some cases above 250 °C)
  • Resistant to severe chemical and thermal stress

We use a multi-stage sintering process in which the powder is melted under controlled conditions and permanently bonded to the substrate. This creates uniform, durable layers – ideal for use in chemical, food and process engineering.

Wet paint systems – corrosion protection coating for steel and more

Wet paint coatings are ideal for complex geometries, hard-to-reach components or substrates where powder coatings are not possible. PTFE, PFA, FEP, epoxy and polyurethane systems are used, among others.

Advantages depending on the type of coating

  • Reliable corrosion protection
  • Chemical resistance
  • Electrical insulation
  • Non-stick effect
  • Customised colour design (e.g. for safety or component identification)

The coatings can be applied to steel, stainless steel or aluminium and are applied precisely in several layers. Defined curing processes create resistant, functional surfaces with a high protective effect – even under demanding conditions.

Thermal spraying

We use thermal spraying to create particularly robust, wear-resistant protective coatings that can be applied selectively. This involves melting metallic or ceramic materials and applying them to the component at high speed – the coating adheres mechanically and provides reliable protection against:

  • Corrosion
  • Erosion
  • Abrasion

Available processes:

  • Flame spraying
  • HVOF (high-velocity oxygen fuel spraying)
  • Plasma spraying
  • Wire arc spraying

Particularly proven: aluminium spraying for cathodic corrosion protection of steel – e.g. in offshore installations, bridge construction or port areas.

Elastomer armouring

Our sprayable polyurethane elastomer coatings combine reliable corrosion protection with high mechanical strength – ideal for components that are also exposed to abrasion, cavitation or vibrations.

Typical properties:

  • High impact strength and abrasion resistance
  • Flexible and resistant to dynamic stress
  • Adheres to steel, stainless steel, aluminium and rubber
  • Variable layer thickness: 0.5 to 20 mm
  • Three Shore hardness grades available

Further advantages:

  • Temperature resistance: –50 °C to +95 °C (briefly up to 120 °C dry)
  • Certain variants are FDA-compliant (for food/pharmaceuticals)
  • On-site application possible (e.g. for repairs)

Special solutions – iron corrosion protection and combination coatings

For particularly demanding applications, we offer tailor-made special coatings that combine corrosion protection with additional functional properties.

Nickel-based alloys:

  • Self-flowing, fuse with the base material under heat
  • Extremely dense, wear- and corrosion-resistant surface
  • Ideal for heavy mechanical and chemical stress
  • Used, for example, in pump technology, the paper industry and chemical processing

Combination coatings:

  1. Metallic base layer + functional top layer (e.g. fluoropolymers)
  1. Combined protection against corrosion, chemicals, adhesion and electrical conductivity
  1. Targeted iron corrosion protection with additional properties

HALAR® coatings (E-CTFE):

  • Extremely resistant to chemicals
  • High temperature and weather stability
  • Excellent diffusion barrier
  • Preferred for use in the chemical industry, e.g. for pipes, containers and linings

Typical industries and applications

Corrosion protection coatings are used wherever metal components are exposed to aggressive media, weathering or mechanical stress. Thanks to the wide range of technologies and material systems available, our solutions can be flexibly adapted to the requirements of a wide variety of industries.

  1. In the chemical industry and process engineering, our coatings reliably protect tanks, reactors, pipelines and fittings from chemical decomposition – even when in constant contact with acids, alkalis or solvents. Fluoropolymers, HALAR® and combined coating systems are primarily used here.
  1. Offshore installations and components in the oil and gas industry benefit from cathodic protection provided by thermally sprayed aluminium – ideal against salt water, spray mist and industrial atmospheres. Bridge components, ship components and ports also rely on this solution.
  1. In transport and vehicle technology – for example in railway, bus or commercial vehicle construction – corrosion protection coatings are indispensable for ensuring long-lasting components. At the same time, they offer additional functions such as non-stick, sliding behaviour or anti-slip properties, for example on loading shafts, guides or frame constructions.
  1. The food, pharmaceutical and medical technology industries place particularly high demands on hygiene, material resistance and certifiability. Our FDA-compliant coatings made of PTFE, PFA or polyurethane meet these requirements and are used, for example, in conveyor elements, mixing systems and containers.
  1. In water and wastewater technology, energy plants and the paper and pulp industry, components at risk of corrosion, such as pump housings, rollers, pipes and valves, are also permanently protected by our coating solutions.

Thanks to our many years of experience, we can provide individual advice to customers from a wide range of industries and respond precisely to their specific requirements – from single items to series production.

            Service portfolio & capacities

We do not view corrosion protection as an isolated individual service, but rather as part of a comprehensive technical solution.
